System requirements for streaming technology

Hardware

PC with Pentium processor with at least 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB graphics card (full screen mode), Windows 2000 or XP, 16 bit sound card. Macintosh computers with similar features and a Mac OS X operating system are equally supported.

Player

Windows Media Player from version 9. (Media Player 7.1 can be used if Codec 9 is installed additionally). Microsoft Internet Explorer from version 5.0 or Safari 2.0 on Macintosh.

Internet Connection

To view films with the streaming technology a DSL connection with a minimum bandwidth of 1 Mbit is required.

AktiveX

To use the streaming technology "ActiveX" has to be activated in your browser. Open "internet options" under the menu item "extras" in your Internet Explorer. Choose the tab "security" and click on "adjust level". Afterwards activate the option "run ActiveX controls and plugins" in the field "preferences".

Streaming-Format

The films provided on the website of the German Short Film Association are streamed in WMV format with the Windows Media Codec 9.
The Windows Media Codec 9 offers the best quality for the used bandwidths. A streaming with Quicktime does not offer the desired quality. Therefore, WMV streamings can only be played reliable on Macintosh computers with a VLC media player. As VLC in its temporary version does not offer a browser plugin, the URL has to be copied. If you want to configure your system (MAC OS X) to run the VLC media player as standard player when starting a WMV streaming (mms://), please use the following instruction "VLC player as standard streaming player on MAC OS X."

To configure MAC OS X to run the VLC media player as standard when starting a WMV streaming (mms://) proceed as follows:
Download the free preference panel "More Internet". After extracting it is at your disposal under configurations. The "More Internet" panel allows a connection of the mms protocol with the VLC media player:
Click on A… and enter mms in the field "What is the protocol you wish to add?".
Als Beschreibung geben Sie "WMV-Streaming" ein. Jetzt bestätigen Sie mit Enter/Return.
Enter "WMV streaming" as description. Confirm with enter/return. Select mms from the left list and drag the programme symbol of the VLC player onto the symbol right from the list of protocols.
You can now close the "More Internet" panel.
